About Ramgarh Forest Division

A territorial forest division of the Department of Forest, Environment & Climate Change, Government of Jharkhand, caring for the forests, wildlife, and forest rest houses of Ramgarh.

Our division

Ramgarh Forest Division is one of the 31 territorial forest divisions of Jharkhand. It was created in 2004, when it was separated from the Hazaribagh East Territorial Forest Division. The notified forest area is 503.97 square kilometres.

The division covers all six blocks of Ramgarh district and two blocks of Hazaribagh district. Its forests are mainly natural Sal and mixed forest, spread across rolling hills. Mining and related activity have broken some of these forests into smaller patches, so protection and restoration remain daily work for the division.

Visitors come for Patratu Lake and the Rajrappa temple, both within the division’s landscape. This portal is the division’s way of offering forest rest houses, starting with Bundu Eco Hut, so a stay stays orderly and on record.

Forests and wildlife

Dense pockets of the division still hold elephant, hyena, barking deer, and peacock. Elephants also move out of the forest and can damage crops and homes. The division asks villagers and visitors to keep a clear distance from any herd.

Field work is organised in five territorial ranges: Kuju, Mandu, Gola, Ramgarh, and Patratu. Each range is divided into beats and sub-beats, where range forest officers and forest guards carry out protection, plantation, and public contact.
